The most complete plan if you are coming from Athens and only have one day

The question we get asked most often about Aegina is “can I see it properly in a day from Athens?”. The honest answer: in one day you can see the essentials, but only if you organise it well. And most travellers do not want to assemble the jigsaw (ferry plus bus plus timetables plus lunch plus getting back before the last boat). This tour solves exactly that: it picks you up in Athens, takes you to the port, puts you on the boat, takes you round in a small group (maximum 18 people) to the four main sites and drops you back at Piraeus between 19:30 and 20:00.

It is different from the “three islands” cruises from Athens (already in draft on our site with several operators): on those you only see Aegina for two hours, at the port. Here the whole day goes to the island.

What is included and what is not

Included:

Hotel pick-up in Athens (central areas: Syntagma, Monastiraki, Plaka, Acropolis) in a small bus.
Return ferry Piraeus-Aegina-Piraeus (conventional ferry, 75 minutes).
Transport on the island in a private minibus between the sites.
Guided visits to Agios Nektarios, Paleochora and the Temple of Aphaia (Aphaia entry included).
A visit to a pistachio farm with a tasting.
Free time (one to two hours) at Agia Marina for a swim and lunch.
English-speaking guide (other languages on specific request).

Not included:

Food and drink (beyond the tasting).
Sunbeds on the beach (5-10€ extra).

The real pain points

It is a very long day: 12 hours door to door. You leave the hotel at 7:30-8:00 and get back between 19:30 and 20:00. For older travellers with limited stamina, or children under seven, it can be too much.
Pace: it delivers, but quickly. Each visit lasts 30 to 60 minutes. This is not for going deep; it is for getting an overview of the island in one move.
Language: always in English. Other languages need confirming when you book and a bilingual guide is not available on every date.
Lunch on the beach: there are 20 to 30 options in Agia Marina, none of them free. Budget 15-25€ per person for a meal with a drink.
Clothing and footwear: at Agios Nektarios they will ask for shoulders and knees covered. Bring a scarf or a long skirt for that visit. Closed shoes for Paleochora (cobbled ground).
Children: the tour accepts children at a reduced rate from age five. It works from about eight or nine. For younger kids, better to do your own day on Aegina independently with a base in Athens.
Cancellation: 24 hours ahead with a full refund on most fares.
Capacity: the small group (maximum 18) is what sets it apart from the mass cruises out of Piraeus, where you are one of 80 to 150 people. Book ahead in August.

When this tour makes sense (and when it does not)

It makes sense if:

You are in Athens for three or four days and can only give one day to the islands.
You want the “full sample” of Aegina (archaeology, religion, beach, food) without organising anything.
You are travelling as a couple or in a group of adults and would rather not hire a car.
You do not mind paying 89-99€ for the convenience.

It does not make sense if:

You have more than one day on Aegina: stay on the island and get around by bus or scooter, it is cheaper and you enjoy it more.
You are travelling in a large group (six or more): booking the ferry plus a taxi-van yourselves is more efficient.
You only care about the beach part: a “three islands” cruise from the port of Athens is enough.
Your priority is quiet and depth: the tour does not linger anywhere.

Alternative: doing it yourself

If you want the DIY version, it costs about 35-45€ per person (ferry 25€ return, island bus 6€, Aphaia entry 6€, lunch 15€). You need seven to eight hours on the island, with the ferry out at 8:30 and back at 18:00. It is perfectly doable and we recommend it if you are a couple with a bit of independence.
